Southwest Hotels is the Rapid Rewards program's dedicated booking portal for hotel accommodations, built around partnerships with five major hotel chains: Marriott Bonvoy, Choice Hotels, Best Western, Hyatt, and MGM Resorts. Unlike Delta Stays or American Airlines Hotels, which operate their own inventory systems, Southwest's model is partnership-based. Members earn and redeem Rapid Rewards points through these established hotel partners rather than through a third-party booking engine. This distinction shapes how the platform works and what value it delivers.

The earning mechanism operates through dual enrollment and cross-linking. To earn Rapid Rewards points on a hotel stay, you need to be a member of both Rapid Rewards and the hotel partner's loyalty program, and your accounts must be linked. Once linked, you book the hotel directly (through the partner's site or app), and points accumulate to both programs simultaneously. Marriott Bonvoy members, for example, earn their Bonvoy points on the stay, and simultaneously earn Rapid Rewards points at a negotiated conversion rate. The typical earning is six hundred Rapid Rewards points per qualifying stay at most partner properties, though rates can vary by brand and special promotions.

The primary advantage of this model is that you earn loyalty currency from both the hotel and the airline at the same time. A night at a Marriott Bonvoy property through the Southwest partnership credits Bonvoy points and elite night status to your Bonvoy account, while also crediting six hundred Rapid Rewards points to your Southwest account. This dual earning is the opposite of airline-operated portals like Delta Stays, where hotel loyalty points are explicitly forfeited. For members who value accumulating both airline miles and hotel loyalty status, Southwest's partnership model is a significant draw.

Booking typically happens through the hotel partner's own website or app rather than through a Southwest-branded portal. You search for your destination and dates on Marriott.com, Hyatt.com, Choice Hotels, or another partner site, and you ensure your loyalty numbers are linked at checkout so both programs credit. Some hotel partners may offer special rates or promotions available only to Rapid Rewards members through specific marketing channels, so Southwest occasionally highlights these deals on its Rapid Rewards partners page. Southwest does not take the booking directly; it facilitates the connection and marketing between Rapid Rewards members and its hotel partners.

Rapid Rewards points earned through hotel bookings post after your stay is completed and settled, typically within six to eight weeks. This window allows time for the hotel to confirm the stay, process the charges, and communicate the earning to Southwest. Partial stays, modifications, or cancellations may reduce or eliminate points earned, depending on when the cancellation occurs relative to the stay completion.

Beyond earning, the portal also enables points conversion. Several hotel partners allow members to convert their hotel loyalty points into Rapid Rewards points at fixed exchange rates. For example, Marriott Bonvoy members can convert points at a rate such as nine thousand Bonvoy points to three thousand Rapid Rewards points. This conversion option is useful for members who have accumulated hotel points but prefer accumulating airline miles, or who want to move excess hotel loyalty balances into a currency they're more likely to spend.

Southwest's Rapid Rewards members can also redeem points directly for hotel bookings through a redemption portal. Instead of paying cash, you search for a hotel, see the Rapid Rewards point cost displayed alongside the cash price, and redeem points for a full or partial stay. The redemption value of points is published by Southwest and can be checked on their website. Members can also combine cash and Rapid Rewards points on a single booking, paying a partial cash amount and using points for the remainder. This flexibility is particularly useful for members working with a specific points balance or trying to deploy an expiring balance before status or promotional miles expire.

The Cash + Points payment option has become increasingly popular as Southwest has expanded it. Rather than requiring a full redemption in points or a full payment in cash, you can select a combination that suits your balance. If you have fifteen thousand points and a hotel room costs ten thousand points or two hundred dollars, you might redeem ten thousand points and pay one hundred dollars in cash to cover the remainder. This flexibility addresses a common problem with rewards programs: partial balances that are insufficient for a full redemption but unwieldy to retain.

Support and customer service for hotel bookings made through the Southwest partnership runs through the hotel, not through Southwest, once you've completed the stay. If you need to modify your reservation before check-in, you contact the hotel or use the hotel's app. If you need to dispute a charge or have a question about Rapid Rewards earning, Southwest's customer service team assists. This split is typical of partnership programs and requires members to understand which organization owns which part of the transaction.

One limitation of the partnership model is inventory breadth. You are restricted to booking through the five major partners rather than the hundreds of thousands of properties available through portals like American Airlines Hotels or Delta Stays. If your travel plans require a boutique property, independent hotel, or smaller chain not owned by the five partners, Southwest Hotels will not fulfill that booking. For travelers whose destinations align with Marriott, Hyatt, Choice, Best Western, and MGM properties, this is not a practical constraint; for others, it narrows the appeal.

The platform's positioning aligns with the Rapid Rewards program philosophy of maximizing earning across multiple spending categories. Members who stay in hotels frequently, prioritize hotel status as much as airline status, and travel primarily within the footprint of Southwest's major partners gain the most value. Those who rarely reach partner hotels, who view hotel earning as secondary to airline earning, or who want comprehensive inventory across independent and small-chain properties will find more utility in the airline-operated portals or in booking directly with the hotel using a general rewards portal like Rakuten or Bilt Rewards.

Southwest Hotels ultimately serves as one component of the Rapid Rewards portfolio rather than a standalone booking platform. It works best for members already embedded in the Southwest and partner hotel ecosystems, who want to layer Rapid Rewards earning on top of hotel loyalty earning, and who book frequently enough at major chains that inventory limitations are immaterial.
